Mark examining a diamond

This week, I was privileged to interview Mark Ebert, Wilshire Coin’s expert gemologist! Here are some questions and answers about his life:

Q: How long have you been in the jewelry business?

A: “Since 1973 — 40 years.”

Q: What got you started?

A: “I took a job at King Jewelers in New Castle Pennsylvania, during Christmas time.”  (a pressuring time in the jewelry world!)

After only two years in the business, Mark began working for GIA as an instructor in 1975.  The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, is a nonprofit institute dedicated to research and education in the field of gemology and the jewelry arts.  Mark stayed for 5 years at the New York location, earning the title of a Graduate Gemologist, or “GG” (cute.)

Q: What was next for you, after GIA?

A: “In 1980, my previous partner and I started a business in the wholesale estate jewelry business, and kept at it for 5 years.  In 1985, he and I split and I began my own business called Ebert & Company — (he laughs) very original, right?”

Ebert & Company existed in the jewelry district in Downtown LA.  Mr. Ebert ran a very successful business up until February of this year, when he retired!  He now blesses Wilshire Coin with his expertise a few times each week, examining all the goodies we have accumulated over the years.

Marks surplus of knowledge and experience in the gemology and jewelry business is invaluable to Wilshire Coin Exchange. We are very confident in his abilities to identify almost all of our items outside of the coin realm. Therefore, all our jewelry, diamonds, and oddball items pass through Mark’s eyes firsthand, in order to begin the eBay team’s research.

Our job is to provide expert advice and knowledge to our trustful customers on all levels of the gold, silver and gemological worlds.  Mark is one of the many great individuals to help us with our ongoing mission!

Here is a picture of Mark’s favorite rare stone, the demantoid garnet!
